Common Horsetails (Equisetum arvense), which are spore-bearing herbs (Pteridophyte), grow in a wide variety of soils in moist areas from lowlands to alpine areas. The brown fertile stems shown here were found in early April, and at 12 inches tall are about as tall as they will get. The green stems -- which are sterile -- can grow to about 2.5 ft. tall.
